How does Iyengar Yoga differ from other styles of Yoga?
The Iyengar method develops strength, flexibility, and optimal body alignment, and deep relaxation. The Iyengar method develops self-awareness, intelligent evaluation, and profound inner reflection. Standing poses are emphasized in the beginning to build up strength and ease of movement, increase vitality, circulation and balance. Postures for deep relaxation are introduced from the beginning. Gradually, sitting and reclining postures, forward bends, backbends, twists, arm balances, and flowing sequences are introduced. This gradual progression in asana and the incorporation of pranayama (breathing practices) provide support for the body and enable the mind to relax and more profoundly receive the benefits of the yoga.

Iyengar Yoga emphasizes precision of alignment in the yoga poses. Why is this important?
We tend to stretch from our more flexible areas and rely on our better-developed muscles for strength, thus reinforcing postural habits. Iyengar Yoga encourages weak parts to strengthen and stiff areas to release, thus awakening and realigning the whole body. As the body moves into better alignment, less muscular work is required and relaxation increases naturally.

Can I stilll do yoga if I have an injury, physical condition or ailment?
Yes, anyone can do yoga. It is very important to inform your yoga teacher of any conditions or injuries you may have. Then postures can be modified (with props) to provide support and safety while in the pose, thus ensuring maximum benefit and comfort.

Should I eat before or after class?
You may eat a light meal one to two hours before class, or a heavy meal four hours before class. Water is available at the studio.

What do people typically wear?
Loose fitting clothes, something comfortable that you can stretch in, something that will enable the instructor to see your alignment is best for yoga.

Do I need to bring my own yoga mat and equipment?
No, we supply all equipment. If you are interested in purchasing yoga equipment for home use, please let us know.

Is there private instruction and, if so, how much does it cost?
